Payne Hall, which is on Vanderbilt鈥檚 Peabody College campus, will undergo an extensive interior renovation and modernization of the building鈥檚 systems starting in summer 2024.听听
鈥淧ayne Hall has long been home to Peabody College鈥檚 acclaimed programs in leadership and policy,鈥 said Camilla P. Benbow, Patricia and Rodes Hart Dean of Education and Human Development. 鈥淲e are excited to revitalize this historic building for a new era of innovative scholarship, collaboration and teaching.鈥听
Built in the early 1950s, Payne Hall historically housed many of Peabody鈥檚 classrooms and faculty offices. The last major renovation of Payne Hall was an interior renovation and upgrade to the mechanical systems in 1986.听听
鈥淲e are excited about the transformative renovation of Payne Hall as part of our continuing infrastructure improvement plan,鈥 said Eric Kopstain, vice chancellor for administration. 鈥淎ligned with the goals of FutureVU, Payne’s modern new design will provide facilities that meet the evolving and innovative needs of our collaborative Vanderbilt campus.”听
Key features of this project are:听
- Bringing the Department of Leadership, Policy and Organizations and its research under one roof听
- Embracing the historic character of Peabody鈥檚 architecture while setting a vision for the future听
- Creating a physical representation of Peabody鈥檚 vision of One Vanderbilt by
- building collaboration and community that promotes more research and improves teaching听
- creating a welcoming environment that fosters belonging听
- leveraging diverse perspectives to help solve today鈥檚 pressing problems听
- developing a culture that values the team over the individual, which is critical to the One Vanderbilt approach听
- creating complementary connections to the recently renovated 6 Magnolia Circle and Mayborn Buildings听
To achieve these goals and vision, the construction project will include upgrading office and classroom spaces, updating systems such as HVAC and elevators, replacing the roof and windows, restoring the historic masonry including below-grade waterproofing, and site improvements to address accessibility issues in and around the building.听听
The anticipated completion of the project is spring 2026.听听
